Origin of Shame
"Who told you, that you were naked?" Genesis 3:11
The first recorded mention of shame is in the Bible. Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit and realized they were naked. Shame overwhelmed their awakened consciousness and they started to look for clothing to cover their nakedness. It is explained by different interpretations that they did that because they realized that they have sinned, but what does that really have to do with clothing?
We are all born naked. In the beginning of our lives it doesn't make us feel one way or another. I'm sure we look for clothing not just due to our awakened consciousness but simply because we are cold, we don't want to get bit by the bugs, we don't care to have sand all over our bodies and many other valid reasons. Shame on the other hand is something quite different.
Once we understand the beginning of the shame we can theorize that we are ashamed of who we are. Or is it who we have become or what we have done? How is that, that in that first moment of consciousness all we cared for is to hide not to explore? Did we all of a sudden realize how little we are in the eyes of the divine? Did we not like the way we look in comparison? What was that comparison to?
Now we have TV, movies, designer clothes, accessories...all sorts of things to make us feel less and different from others. If you are comfortable with who you are the shame simply disappears. In 2017 I had an eye opening experience in what we have become. I experienced cruelty, injustice, betrayal, disappointment and emptiness all on the same day. For months to come those feelings were enlarged by the feeling of the unknown. Yet in those months of emotional struggle the Universe provided me with everything I needed to survive and grow: air, shelter, food, water, companionship and the Bible.
Do not have people simply interprets the Bible for you, either you believe or not you have to read it for yourself to figure out what you want to believe in and where you would like for that Word to take you. From core to core any version you get will give you a certain message and the message I got was: Love. The only thing that is worth anything in this world is our desire to be better and love one another.
No judgement, no prosecution, no knowledge will matter and will make you feel any better than letting go of your shame and comparison, filling your heart with kindness and sharing your love with those around you. I had people I don't know come talk to me in their moments of suffering, I saw their tears, I felt their pain, I simply listened to their stories. Good, bad, average...I didn't try to judge them, just listened because after all we are all human, we all make mistakes, our experiences are just experiences, and all we can do is rise above our flaws and try to be better one day at a time.
Get to know yourself for who you are, not who others tell you "you are". Personal development doesn't come from the job, money or possessions; it comes from living life, your interactions with others and experiences you encounter. Personal development requires slowing down and quietly looking deep into your inner self without judgement in search for the answers.
Luke 6:37 "Do not judge and you will not be judged." This does not just apply to others it also applies to yourself, if you constantly judge yourself how are you to see the true nature of humanity, how are you to spread kindness and love if all you have is sorrow and pain.
I ask you to shed the layers of shame off your being and become the being you are meant to be: free immortal soul full of love, compassion and happy suffering.
